Searching Cases by Name
Most people start a public Sheboygan County case search by party name. The free WCCA Simple Search is the official route for that. WCCA stands for Wisconsin Circuit Court Access. Keep the query narrow. That way you do not pull up strangers who happen to share a last name.
- Open Simple Search and enter the last name. Add first and middle names when known.
- Select Sheboygan County. Add case type or status only when those facts are known.
- Review the filing date, county, status, and name in each result row.
- Open the case number that matches, then verify its caption, type, branch, and activity.
The official WCCA Simple Search source shows the public controls.

This is why the county and name fields matter together. A matching name is just a lead until the case details line up as well.
| Field label | Type | Required | Search use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Optional | Party surname; pair with first name |
| First Name | Text | Optional | Narrows people with the same surname |
| Middle Name | Text | Optional | Can include records with no middle name |
| Business Name | Text | Optional | Finds an organization shown as a party |
| County | Dropdown | Optional | Select Sheboygan rather than statewide |
| Case Type | Multi-select | Optional | Narrows civil, criminal, family, probate, or other groups |
Sheboygan Simple and Advanced Search
Simple Search fits when you already hold a name or a case number. When you need more control, WCCA Advanced Search offers plenty. Fields include filing and disposition dates, date of birth, attorney or State Bar ID, issuing agency, citation number, DA case number, offense date, and number ranges. Case-type and class-code lists there are dynamic. Treat them as live filters, never as a fixed list of legal outcomes.
Pick Sheboygan County before hunting for an issuing agency. The agency choices can depend on the county chosen. Enter only facts tied to the matter. If the current status is uncertain, skip the status filter. It can hide the very record you want.
The official Advanced Search interface spells out the full field set.

The difference is easy to see here. Advanced Search rewards a careful filter set, while Simple Search is usually quicker when you hold one exact number.
Searching by Case Number
One exact case number is the strongest key for a Sheboygan County docket search. Wisconsin circuit numbers combine a four-digit year, a two-letter case type, and a six-digit sequence. A generic example is 2024CV000001. Here 2024 marks the filing year, CV the civil case type, and 000001 the sequence. WCCA uses type codes for each kind of case. CF stands for felony, and CM for misdemeanor. CT is criminal traffic, CV civil, SC small claims, FA family, and PR probate.
Shorthand like 98tr1 or 02cf1 may be converted by the system, according to WCCA help. Leading zeros and the century can sometimes be dropped. Even so, confirm the county, filing year, and case type that come back. Short entries are easy to mistype. Keep the DA case number and citation number in their own Advanced Search fields. They are separate identifiers.
Why Sheboygan Searches Use CAPTCHA
Expect a CAPTCHA now and then during a Sheboygan County case search on WCCA. That challenge is an anti-abuse control limiting automated harvesting. It is not a docket field, and it should not be bypassed. Search manually and tighten the query so you page through fewer results.
Another challenge may appear after more searches, and exact behavior can change. If the portal will not cooperate, a private records aggregator is not the answer. Call the Sheboygan County Clerk of Circuit Court at 920-459-3068, or visit the first-floor counter at 615 N. 6th Street. The clerk routes records questions by division.
What a Case Search Returns
A Sheboygan County case search returns a result list first. A case summary appears once you select a case number. Results usually show the case number, filing date, county, status, and name. The detail page can go further. Branch, responsible official, caption, parties, attorneys, and activity may appear. So can settings, disposition, receivables, and document indicators.
| Case Number | The year, type code, and sequence that identify the circuit case. |
|---|---|
| Caption and Parties | The case title and public party-role display; a role alone proves no claim. |
| Case Type | The category, such as criminal, civil, family, probate, or traffic. |
| Filed Date | The date the court case was opened, not necessarily a hearing date. |
| Status | An open, pending, active, closed, or disposed concept using current system wording. |
| Activity | Dated entries for filings, notices, hearings, orders, or other court acts. |
WCCA also offers Next and Previous controls, Return to Search Results, a Printable Version, or RSS on some reports. A document indicator only says an item exists. It does not mean the filed page can be downloaded.
Sheboygan Summary Versus Filed Document
The public Sheboygan County case summary is a register of actions, not a full image repository. It can confirm that a complaint, motion, notice, order, or judgment was filed. The underlying page or transcript usually must be requested from the Clerk of Circuit Court office run by Christine Koenig.
| Public WCCA summary | Clerk-held court file |
|---|---|
| Free docket-level viewing | Inspectable records and requested copies where access permits |
| Dates, status, parties, events, settings | Filed documents, orders, transcripts, and certified copies as available |
| Convenience search, subject to online limits | Authoritative custodian route for the circuit record |
Written criminal copy requests should be specific. Name the case number, the defendant's first and last name, and the documents wanted. Send them to Sheboygan.records@wicourts.gov or fax 920-459-3921. That email handles records requests only, not new case filings. Without a case number, the county lists a $5 search fee.
Statewide vs County Case Search
There is no separate Sheboygan-only online docket portal. WCCA is the statewide circuit search, and choosing Sheboygan County creates the local view. For documents, certified copies, old files, or questions about a public result, the county clerk remains the direct local channel.
| WCCA statewide portal | Sheboygan County clerk channel |
|---|---|
| Searches public circuit summaries across Wisconsin | Handles the local circuit file and division routing |
| Best for a name, case number, type, date, or citation query | Best for documents, certified copies, and online gaps |
| Free summary view with CAPTCHA limits | Copy, certification, delivery, or search fees may apply |
Appeals run through Wisconsin Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Access, known as WSCCA. Federal matters go to PACER and the Eastern District of Wisconsin system. Municipal ordinance cases stay with their municipal clerks. Search the court named on your notice. Do not assume every Sheboygan County matter sits in one database.
When a Sheboygan Result Is Missing
A blank screen is not the end of the story. Do not assume a Sheboygan County case is missing. Check the spelling, the county filter, the case type, the filing date, and the number format. Then loosen the name query. Appeals live in WSCCA, so search there if the matter went up. City ordinance tickets stay with the municipal court printed on the citation.
Calling the right Sheboygan County clerk division beats guessing. Older files may sit under the judiciary's retention rules and need a direct request. Some records are confidential, sealed, juvenile, or otherwise closed. Staff can point you to the public access channel. They cannot reveal protected content or hand out legal advice.
Note: A blank result can come from bad search terms, the wrong court, restricted access, or archival status. It does not mean the file is missing.
Access and Restricted Cases
Wisconsin law decides what any public Sheboygan County case search can show. Wis. Stat. §801.19 shields listed personal numbers in filings. Confidential filing types fall under Sections 801.20 and 801.21. Those sections also give the steps to seal or redact court information. Juvenile court-record access is governed by Wis. Stat. §938.396.
So WCCA may omit or limit juvenile, guardianship, confidential, sealed, or redacted material. You might see that a motion or order exists. Its content stays hidden. Victim, citizen-witness, juror, and birth-date details get special handling too. The Wisconsin judiciary notes that current redaction rules cover documents filed after July 1, 2016. Older files were not automatically reviewed.
Treat the public summary as a court-record tool only. A partial entry is never a reason to guess at hidden facts.
Choose a Sheboygan Search Route
Let the fact in hand pick the tool. Simple Search suits a party name or a single case number. For a date, attorney, agency, citation, offense, DA number, or a range, choose Advanced Search. When the question is a circuit hearing date, pull up the WCCA calendar. Judgment Search answers judgment-related queries. Still, WCCA cautions that its judgment view is not the official judgment and lien docket.
The official WCCA help page covers the search limits. It covers CAPTCHA, exclusions, and how a summary differs from the documents at the courthouse.

That help page drives the point home. Verify any Sheboygan County case against its full detail, and contact the originating court whenever the public summary is not enough.
